The sanctuary of the Sacred Island of Delos
Cradle of Zeus' children

Imagine a tiny island in the heart of the Aegean Sea, a place where mythology and history have come together to create an extraordinary archaeological site. According to legend, it was on Delos that Leto, persecuted by Hera, gave birth to the divine twins Apollo and Artemis. This mythical event made Delos the navel of the world, a major place of pilgrimage for the inhabitants of Magna Graecia. Over the centuries, Delos developed into an important religious and commercial center, with magnificent temples built in honor of Apollo and other deities. Sailors and merchants came to Delos to worship and trade. In the 5th century BC, Delos became the symbol of an alliance of Greek city-states under the aegis of Athens, the League of Delos. Today, Delos is an inhabited island, but it is also one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Its impressive remains include sanctuaries dedicated to Apollo, Egyptian and Syrian gods, the famous Lions' Terrace, residential quarters and numerous mosaics. All these wonders offer a fascinating insight into the religious, cultural and economic history of ancient Greece.

Delos, the navel of the ancient world

Think of a place where mythology and history have come together to create an extraordinary archaeological site: a small island in the middle Aegean Sea. That is Delos, a holy place for the ancient Greeks.

The cradle of Zeus' children

The legend goes that Leto, persecuted by Hera, gave birth in Delos to two divine twins, Apollo and Artemis. It was this mythical event that made Delos the navel of the world and an important place of pilgrimage for the ancient Greeks.

Religious and commercial center

Over the centuries, the city of Delos developed into an important religious and commercial centre. In honour of Apollo and other gods, magnificent temples were built. Sailors and merchants traded between the cities of Magna Graecia, stopping at Delos to pay homage to the gods.

The treasure of the League of Delos

In the 5th century B.C. Delos became the treasury of the Delos League, an alliance of Greek city-states under the aegis of Athens. Thousands of people and travellers came to the island, bringing with them a period of great prosperity. Delos fell into oblivion at the end of the Roman period and with the advent of Christianity.
