A short descriptive history of the region of Corinth

Region of Corinth
History and Mysteries at the gates of the city

One day, an inquisitive traveler, guided by a touch of curiosity, ventured into the legendary region of Corinth. His journey began in front of the awe-inspiring Corinth Canal, a true feat of engineering in the ancient world. Intrigued, he paused to observe the underwater bridges that rose and fell with the ships, adding an air of mystery and charm to what was already an extraordinary place. Continuing on his way, he came upon the Diolkos, an ancient paved passageway once used to transport ships across the isthmus. He could almost hear loaded carts rolling, wearing away the stones polished by centuries of trade and effort. Next, he came face to face with the Hexamilion Wall, an impressive defensive structure that stood proudly. Here he felt the echoes of long ago battles, men fighting to protect this strategic location.

In the city of Sicyone, he took a moment to explore forgotten ruins, discovering fascinating stories carved in stone and learning the secrets of sculpting. Soon after, he climbed to the top of Acrocorinth, which sits proudly on a rocky promontory. From up there, the panorama stretched as far as the eye could see. He felt transported to another time, where every stone whispered the story of a once strong and powerful Corinth. Finally, he set out to explore the ancient ports of Kechries and Lekaion, the hub of ancient Corinthian trade. Here, he could almost imagine ancient merchants unloading their cargoes of exotic goods. As he surveyed these wharves, he knew he was following in the steps of those who traversed these same waters centuries ago.

Later, he made his way to the site of Isthmia to pay homage to the god of the sea. There, he imagined the enthusiastic shouts of spectators at the Isthmian Games, celebrating Poseidon in a collective fervor. The path led our visitor to the Perachora Heraion, a peaceful seaside sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Hera. As he looked out over the glittering sea, he understood why this restful place was so sacred.

Our explorer continued his adventure, discovering more hidden nooks and other little treasures, enchanted by each place that seemed to whisper a new story. And so he continued to explore, taking with him a piece of this enchanted and mysterious land, savoring every moment of his journey to the heart of ancient Greece.

A cultural and historical treasure trove

The region of Corinth is an authentic treasury of ancient Greece, combining history, breathtaking landscapes and cultural attractions. Culmination of an ancient dream

The idea of piercing the isthmus to connect the Aegean and Ionian Seas has been around since the time of the ancient Greeks, and historical figures such as the tyrant Periander of Corinth have envisioned this titanic project. Instead, he built the Diolkos, a paved road allowing carts to transport ships across the isthmus. It wasn't until the end of the 19th century that the Corinth Canal was finally completed. It became a feat of engineering and a symbol of human innovation. Today, linking two maritime worlds in a narrow passage, it fascinates visitors with its history and bold architecture.
