Commercial strength

Situated on the isthmus that connected the Greek mainland with the Peloponnese, Corinth controlled the trade routes between the Ionian Sea and the Aegean Sea, thanks to its two ports of Lechaion and Cenchrées. It exported pottery, textiles and bronzes, and imported valuable goods from the East and West. Its wealth came from maritime trade, taxes on ships and its greatest innovation: the "diolkos", a paved road that facilitated the transportation of ships across the isthmus. It was this position that made it one of the most prosperous cities of the ancient world.

The glory and splendour of the city

Built in the 6th century BC, the Temple of Apollo is one of the oldest temples in Greece. It's a masterpiece of Doric architecture with 38 majestic columns reaching almost 8 meters high. Dedicated to Apollo, the god of art and light, it served as a central place of worship. It attracted pilgrims and worshippers alike. Its harmonious design and the sculptures adorning its friezes bear witness to the cultural and religious wealth of Corinth, making it an emblematic symbol of the ancient city's glory.

Here's a short list of things to see and do to better understand the historical, cultural and social richness of ancient Corinth:
