That's what you'll discover when you visit Epidaurus, an extraordinary archaeological site on the Peloponnese peninsula. The Epidaurus site in Argolid was a Panhellenic sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius, god of medicine. The sanctuary is thought to have been founded in the 4th century BC, although recent discoveries date it much earlier. It quickly became an important pilgrimage site where the sick came for healing. The sanctuary included a temple dedicated to Asclepius, as well as buildings for receiving pilgrims and performing therapeutic treatments. After participating in rituals and purifications, pilgrims would spend the night in the Asclepieion. This was the place where prophetic dreams were sent to guide them to healing. The famous theater of Epidaurus, built at the same time, is evidence of the cultural importance of the site. It was used for theatrical and musical performances in honor of Asclepius. It also hosted athletic competitions.
