Mycenae, from Cyclops to Kings
Epic of a legendary city

The Citadel of Mycenae and the Treasure of Atreus bear exceptional witness to the grandeur of the Mycenaean culture. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these archaeological sites allow visitors to travel back in time to a civilization that helped shape the history of Greece and Europe. Perched on a hill, the fortified city of Mycenae was one of the most powerful cities in Greece in the 2nd millennium BC. Its acropolis was a truly impregnable fortress. It was dominated by Cyclopean walls made of gigantic blocks of stone so well fitted together that they seemed to have been laid by the legendary Cyclops. Inside this citadel was the royal palace, the administrative and religious center of the city. It was here that the kings of Mycenae reigned, and their names are still echoing in our memory thanks to the epics of Homer. Below the citadel stands one of the most impressive structures of ancient Greece: The Treasury of Atreus, a funerary monument often associated with the myth of Agamemnon and his father. In reality, it's a tholos, a circular structure covered by a dome, designed to house the tombs of the city's kings. In order to build this architectural masterpiece, the Mycenaeans employed remarkable construction techniques, using Cyclopean blocks of stone that were perfectly fitted or shaped. The Mycenaeans were great merchants and talented craftsmen. They were particularly skilled in metallurgy and bronzework, and produced objects of great beauty. Also great navigators, their civilization flourished thanks to rich trade with other peoples of the eastern Mediterranean. The Mycenaeans left behind a considerable cultural legacy. This includes a system of writing on clay tablets, Linear B, which formed the basis for a common language and alphabet.

Why Visit Mycenae?

  • The Cradle of Mycenaean Civilization: Mycenae was one of the most powerful centers of Greece between 1600 and 1100 BC, playing a central role in the culture and politics of the time. It was here that the Mycenaean civilization flourished, leaving an indelible mark on Greek and European history.
  • The city of the Homeric heroes: Mycenae is often associated with Homer's epic tales, especially the Iliad, where it is described as the city of the legendary King Agamemnon, leader of the Greeks during the Trojan War. Visiting Mycenae means following the footsteps of these mythological heroes.
  • The monumental Lioness Gate is one of the most emblematic structures of Mycenaean architecture. It is the oldest sculptured relief in the world depicting life-size creatures and is over 3,000 years old.
  • Tholos Tombs: Numerous examples of domed burial structures on the site, including the Treasury of Atreus. Never before built in the ancient world, these impressive tombs are masterpieces of ancient engineering.
  • The Perched Citadel: Mycenae, perched on its hilltop, offers spectacular views over the plain of Argos. From its perch, visitors can imagine the fortified city that once dominated the entire region, a testament to its military and economic might.
  • Cyclopean walls: In an architectural feat that still impresses construction experts, the walls of the citadel are composed of gigantic blocks of stone. It is believed that the Cyclops were involved in the construction of the walls, but the precision of their construction remains a mystery.
  • Artifacts and treasures: The museum presents a rich collection of artifacts, including golden funerary masks, weapons, jewelry and pottery, which illustrate Mycenaean technical and artistic mastery.
  • A place steeped in history and legend: Mycenae is deeply rooted in Greek mythology, with legends associated with figures such as Agamemnon, Clytemnestra and Orestes, not to mention Paris and La Belle Hélène, who was responsible for the Trojan War.
  • A key stop on a historical tour: An ideal location for a discovery tour, Mycenae is close to many other important historical sites such as Corinth, Nemea, Tirynthe, Epidaurus and Nafplio.
  • The origins of trade: In ancient Greece, Mycenae was an important economic and cultural center. The Mycenaeans developed a written language known as Linear B and traded with many regions of the Mediterranean.

During the hottest periods, between the middle of June and the middle of September, it's best to prefer the early opening hours or the late afternoons.
  • Plan your visit: Depending on your interests, allow at least two and a half to three hours to explore the Citadel, the Treasure of Atreus and the Archaeological Museum.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: The archaeological site is very large and you will have to walk on paths that are sometimes quite uneven.
  • Have sun protection on hand: Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, especially in the summer.
  • Bring water with you: Water is not always available, so make sure you stay hydrated.

  • Be aware of weather conditions: The area can be subject to strong winds, especially on the heights of the citadel. Be prepared with appropriate clothing. In wet weather, the paths can be very slippery. Be careful and remember to wear shoes with a good grip.
  • Explore the surrounding area: After Mycenae, consider visiting Tirynthe, another nearby Mycenaean city, or drive to Nafplio, a picturesque city with a rich history. Nearby sites such as Epidaurus, Assini, Argos and Nemea are also worth a visit.
