Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games
A cultural path between sanctuary and museums

Olympia is an ancient sanctuary of great importance. This archaeological site takes us back to the time when the Greeks celebrated the Olympic Games every four years. It was a sporting and religious event of great importance. At the heart of the sanctuary is the Temple of Zeus, dedicated to the father of the gods, where worship took place.  This majestic structure was a testament to the power and wealth of the Greeks, whose chryselephantine statue of Zeus was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Nearby, outside the sacred precincts of Altis, is the antique stadium, where sporting competitions were held, immersing visitors in the world of ancient athletes. The importance of physical preparation and health in ancient Greece is reflected in the ruins of gymnasiums, palaces and thermal baths. Lining up the city's treasures further emphasises their value and confirms their prosperity. However, a visit to Olympia is not limited to exploring the ancient ruins: several museums enrich the tour and complement the discovery of this historic site. You will discover everyday objects and artistic treasures, the history of the ancient Olympiad and the work of the archaeologists who have revived this sacred site. These museums must be visited if you want a complete immersion in the spirit of Olympia and the history of Greek civilisation.

Not to be missed on site

  • Temple of Zeus, religious centre of the sanctuary, home to the Chryselephantine statue of Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
  • Temple of Hera, one of Greece's oldest temples, where the Olympic flame is lit before every modern Olympics.
  • The Ancient Stadium, the heart of the Ancient Olympic sports competitions, offering an immersion into the world of athletes of the time.
  • The Altis Sanctuary, the sacred heart of the site, a rectangular area surrounded by walls containing the main temples, altars and statues of Zeus and other deities, as well as many votive bases.
  • The Bouleuterion, the seat of the Council of Hellanodices, the judges of the Olympic Games, where oaths were taken.
  • The workshop of Phidias, creator of the chryselephantine statue of Zeus, is a testimony to the great art of the time.
  • The Treasures of the Cities are small buildings lined up in the sacred precincts of Altis. The treasuries contained precious offerings representing the wealth and piety of the Greek cities.
  • The Gymnasiums and Palaces are buildings dedicated to the training of athletes, which underline the importance of physical preparation in ancient Greece.
